From what I understand (another forum purely meat eaters Neutral ), this is required when one is muscle building for males typically so that the muscles could recover faster? Is my understanding right or busted?

If so, what is good for us vegans? And possibly another option besides protein shake (for some reason i dislike) - I read somewhere lentil soup is great for post-workout? Yeah?

Thanks Very Happy Very Happy

I've actually covered my post nutrition ideas somewhat on the VBB blog click here to see that. My views have modified slightly as I don't believe you need quite as much carbs post workout as I mentioned after training weights.
Pre-workout it depends on how fast your stomach empties (trying to workout with food still in your stomach is like begging for the sick bucket!). So, an hour or 2 before training eat something that has complex carbs & protein in it. That's it really, say you have wholemeal toast with peanut butter, that'd do it, anything really to fuel you through the session.
Any soup with legumes would be an ok choice for post-workout as they're pretty high in protein. If you don't mind unusual combinations, then something like a thick lentil soup & quinoa would be ace as you'd get the carbs you need & the protein as well (I'm assuming home made lentil soup, the shop bought stuff is inferior to home made).
As I said pre-workout should be eaten within an hour or 2 of training (most people can feel when food leaves there stomach & trust me you only need to hit the gym once when it hasn't & workout hard & you'll know you need longer next time No ). For post exercise I'd try to get food down me within the hour if possible.
That's about all you need to know to get started I think. Just one last point as you are trying to lose weight do not add these in as extra meals, shuffle your present eating around so it fits this timetable if possible. We don't want too many variables swapping around at once or if it doesn't work (or works really well) we won't know which factors actually made it work or fail, so will not have a clear idea of how to proceed.
