2 months before his 105 birthday Joe was hit by a minivan & later died in hospital. Joe was in great health , didn't need glasses or a hearing aid, had a truly amazing memory (both long & short term). He was best known as a strongman, the last survivor from the height of the strongman era knowing all the greats , from Warren Travis, to the guys at York barbell & beyond. He was also a war hero (once carrying 4 injured men under his arms to safety) & a veggie from the age of 20. Joe was a the last of the old time physical culture pathfinders, the one's who advocated health (& a meat-free diet as part of that health package) & fitness. The guy deadlifted 500 pounds at age 75! did 102 dips in a competition & still trained using weights with over a century of life behind him! (he also had a grip better than 90% of us on this board have when past the 100 mark!). To be honest everyone was taken aback as Joe was in perfect health & it took an accident to finally claim him, otherwise how long he'd have lived to none of us can guess!
Anyway here's an article about Joe, there is a lot more if you do a search on google & the AOBS are doing a tribute to Joe at their next dinner (veggie food might be a fitting tribute - hint hint!).
